I try to keep my head up high the next morning as I walk through the airport, but I am mortified. Matt! Of all people, he had to be there right at that moment, didn’t he? What is it with that man?

Fortunately, none of the passengers realise the state I was in last night and as we are boarding the passengers to fly back, a little girl comes up to me.

‘You look like a doll,’ she says.

Despite the horrendous headache I am struggling with, I smile at the mum and daughter and say thank you. What a lovely little girl.

I have certainly learned my lesson to never get carried away or give into peer pressure again. I have hardly been able to look at Gavin and the rest of the crew.

‘You all right, chick? You seem a bit quiet,’ says Gavin as we are getting meals out of the oven for the service.

‘Not really, a bit embarrassed about last night,’ I say.

‘We’ve all done it. What goes on down-route, stays down-route. Forget it. Believe me, some crew have made us lose hotel contracts, their behaviour’s been so bad. Being sick in the middle of a hotel lobby is the least of the airline’s worries,’ says Gavin, laughing.

‘Oh no,’ I say. It makes me feel terrible as he says it out loud like that.

‘Don’t blame yourself. It was all those shots, cocktails and then, of course, it was your first time trying brown cow, to be fair,’ says Gavin sympathetically.

‘Don’t remind me. Urgh. What was in it anyway?’ I ask.

‘Tia Maria, brandy, milk. I don’t know, whatever dregs I managed to find off the aircraft. I may have put some vodka in. I just mixed it all up,’ says Gavin.

No wonder I was so ill.

‘Well, I don’t think I’ll ever touch the stuff again,’ I say.

‘You’ll get used to it,’ he says, smiling.

Somehow, I manage to get through the flight. I don’t know if things seem easier on this flight as I have had more practice, or if it is just because I am feeling so rubbish that I don’t overthink everything, as I have a tendency to do. Still, the plane can’t land fast enough for me to get off.

When we land and all the passengers have disembarked, I say goodbye to Gavin, Christine and the rest of the crew. Despite my misadventure, they have been great to fly with. So friendly and, more importantly, so forgiving.

‘Hope to fly with you again soon,’ says Christine as we sign out at head office.

‘You too,’ I say with a smile. Although, if truth be told, I don’t think I would be able to keep up with her again. I think I would insist that at least I eat next time and not just go for drinks.

As soon as I reach home, I breathe a sigh of relief. I survived my first flight and worked through a horrendous hangover.

I make myself some tea and lie on the sofa with a blanket.
